The Victoria Falls are open all year round, however the best time of the year to visit the Falls will depend on what you are most interested in seeing and doing. In April the falls are at their most spectacular with beautiful balmy weather taking place and the amazing spectacle of the Zambezi in full flood, rushing into the gorge below. The multitude of viewing points on the Zimbabwe side makes it the best place to view the falls from. During the winter months, the game viewing around waterholes is outstanding, as are the many adventure activities that take place throughout the rest of the year.

From August onwards, the months of summer provide the perfect opportunity to experience the white water rafting, river boarding and canoe trips up the Zambezi river. Furthermore, the bird life during this time is at its most spectacular which a huge variety of migrant birds returning south to spend the summer months in and around the Zambezi river. Photography will also be excellent during this time of the year as much of the surrounding wilderness will be in full bloom as a result of the summer rains. Blooming flowers, moody sunsets and epic thunderstorms all provide easy pickings for any photographers portfolio of African images.

The summer begins in late August with hot and dry weather until the rainy season begins late November where the weather changes to hot and wet. This wet season continues until April when the dry season begins. The daytime temperatures in summer can rise above 32C (90F) while at night they can drop to around 15C (60F). The muggy heat causes thunderclouds to build which can lead to riveting sunsets as well as brief thunderstorms. This is the perfect time of the year to enjoy the range of water orientated activities, such as white water rafting and the Victoria Falls pool, that are on offer.

The bird life during summer is particularly good with a broad range of migrants present throughout a variety of habitats. Enticed by the lengthy waterway of the Zambezi river, boat cruises are an exceptional way to appreciate these colourful creatures in their natural surrounds. Just make sure that you head out on a clear afternoon as you do not want to be on the water during an electric storm.

The winter season is mild and dry. From the months of May to mid-August the weather conditions are balmy and offer plenty of African sunshine. The daytime temperatures range from 15C-25C (70F) however they can also fall to below freezing at night. Make sure you bring something warm! The game viewing is particularly good during this time of the year as many of the larger animals will concentrate around water holes, offering lengthy sightings with plenty of photography opportunities.

Winter in Victoria Falls still offers all of the usual water based activities, including white-water rafting, and kayaking on the Zambezi. The days, however, will be shorter so activities will have to be done in closer conjunction with one another to ensure you maximize your stay at the falls and surrounds.
